End Of Life Doula

Is this something new?

The concept of a death doula might be unfamiliar to many due to cultural taboos surrounding death, and the medicalization of the dying process which often occurs in clinical settings, distancing it from traditional, personal end-of-life care practices. Additionally, limited media coverage, societal conversations about death doulas, and a general discomfort in discussing death contribute to the lack of awareness. Without broader education or exposure to end-of-life care options, many remain unaware of the support that death doulas can provide during this significant life phase.

End Of Life Doula

Melissa Dowling, J.D.

I am a trained End of Life Doula. I have the honor of serving the dying by walking my clients & loved ones through the final months of their lives and eventual death in the Phoenix area. I show people how to make their deaths a beautiful & peaceful transition, which they can approach without fear. From advanced planning through death rituals, bereavement & legacy work, I help the terminally ill identify their needs while showing their caregivers how to honor & respect their loved one’s wishes. I provide education, companionship, respite, & bio/psych/social support with a gentle, human touch. I respect the whole person, without judgment, regardless of race, gender, religion, social status, or other labels.

Where can you find me?

I proudly serve both families & individuals in the metro Phoenix area, the NW Valley, Sun City and Sun City West.

I journeyed through the halls of the University of Arizona, earning my Bachelor of Arts, and then ventured to the sun-kissed campus of Arizona State University, where I secured my Juris Doctor degree.

Avid reader and relentless animal lover.

A death doula is a non-medical person trained to provide holistic care (physically, emotionally, and spiritually) to individuals at the end of their life. We are also known as end-of-life coaches, soul midwives, transition guides, and death midwives among other titles.

They support individuals and their families during the end-of-life process, similar to how a birthing doula supports during childbirth. They help create empowering end-of-life plans, provide spiritual care, psychological and social support, suggest ideas for physical comfort, and educate on options like home vigils, home wakes, and natural burials.

I recommend contacting local hospice for those facing terminal illness. Our doula services complement hospice care by offering more time, personalized attention, and continuous bedside presence. Unlike hospice, constrained by Medicare guidelines, I provide extended advocacy in hospitals or at home. Our training, deeper than hospice volunteer programs, equips us to handle intense emotions. We offer full-time companionship at vigil and death, personalized end-of-life care planning, and enduring client relationships, fulfilling holistic care need beyond the medical focus of hospice.

The cost varies case by case, depending on the needs of the client. I am always available to learn about specific circumstances and then build a package based on the needs of the individual and their family.

Finding the right training program and teacher is crucial for becoming a death doula. Organizations like the International Doulagivers Institute provide education and certification for aspiring death doulas.
